How Does Recovery Happen?

Recovery is a complex process that includes multiple elements for success.  The elements are delivered over time and phased in based on consumer readiness, capacity, and wish--joined to the necessary professional competencies.

  • High Level of Professional Competence
    • Expertise in the Diagnosis and Management of Serious Mental Illness
    • Extensive training and practice experience in the delivery of evidence-based practices
    • Capacity for forming compassionate mentoring relations with consumers
    • Belief in recovery as the expected end point of treatment and supports

     

  • Clear Evaluation of the presenting disorder
    • Understanding of the brain/biochemical disorders facing the individual
    • Evaluation of the course and severity of the illness
    • Knowledge of the disorder's impact (emotional/behavioral/social) on the individual
    • Appraisal of the consumer's experience and understanding of the disorder
    • Assessment of the individual's strengths (both personal and social)

     

  • Engagement of the consumer
    • Motivational Interviewing to engage the patient
    • Personal Goals defined by the individual with the disorder
    • Agreement on treatment and rehabilitation objectives
    • Formation of a collaborative alliance targeted on assisting the individual

     

  • Provision of Community Treatment and Rehabilitation
    • Delivery of psychopharmacological regimen applicable to the disorder/acuity
      • Use of evidence-based Prescribing Algorithms
