Health Plans manage the healthcare of populations, one person at a time. Their decisions must balance their own corporate cost/risk/benefit amidst the the competing needs of customers, providers, and members. A tall order--but done well and with grace by most insurance companies. But behavioral healthcare is an anomaly: it is included in most benefit packages but frequently as a stepchild. The benefit will usually be limited; the medical offset unclear. But as more health plans recognize the benefit of disease management technologies (such as with Diabetes, COPD, or Asthma), the place of member attitude and behavioral management of compliance comes very much to the foreground. Self Management of illnesses in physical healthcare or--as found at Touchstone innovaré--in the chronic care of serious mental illness--requires behavioral healthcare intervention that work to ensure compliance. This section will join the discussion of the place of behavioral healthcare in chronic care management.
